We believe the club began in 1935 as St Oswald’s Art Club. It closed during the Second World War, and re-opened in 1945 as Cullercoats Art Club. Members included draughtsmen from Swan Hunter shipbuilders, and their work included photo-realistic depictions of maritime subjects. At that time the members met in the Thompson Hall, Marden Estate. Approximately 30 attended each meeting. The aim was – and still is – for members to develop their own work, in a variety of media, with positive help, suggestions and encouragement from other members. The club met at the North Shields Community Fire Station until September 2019, when it moved to its current location St Hilda’s Church Hall, Stanton Road, North Shields.
